How is the job market in San Diego and what resources are there for finding work?
Because of the school trips (Wilderness, Practicum, etc.) and morning class schedule, students may be somewhat limited in their job options. However, motivated students do not have much difficulty finding work in hourly wage jobs. Among the fields frequently chosen by students are food service, retail, security, temp work, and administrative assistance. Besides responding to “help wanted” ads in the newspaper and applying for jobs at local businesses, one-time or short-term work opportunities that come through church or personal contacts are sometimes available to HSE students. Additionally, enterprising students organize their own car washes, bake sales, yard sales, or similar activities.

What housing options do students have?
Because the school does not have any housing to offer, it is the student’s responsibility to find his/her own housing. The real estate market in San Diego is relatively expensive. Consequently, most single students coming from outside of San Diego County choose to share a rental apartment with one or more roommates, typically other HSE students. The average 1-bedroom apartment in San Diego rents for about $1300/month and the average 2-bedroom for about $1600/month, although students who shop around can find lower rent than this. There are several rental apartment complexes very near to the school. For single students willing to share a two or three-bedroom apartment with several roommates, monthly rent can be as low as $300 per person including utilities. HSE staff can help match students who are seeking to share an apartment together and facilitate the apartment search by pointing out some desirable areas or apartment complexes where other students live.

I am married. Is HSE recommended for couples or is it designed more for the single person?

In HSE2, students benefit from a smaller and more intimate discipleship environment and have a separate curriculum based around different core values which prepares them in practical and challenging ways to be launched into a significant new life for Christ.
