Team 1 started off today on the downtown streets of Indianapolis. We arrived at ten thirty and spent most of the day having conversations and sharing the Gospel. We started outside but it began to rain so we slowly moved indoors; into the mall, different coffee shops, wherever. One of the groups went under a bus stop and talked to a guy named Michael who was a bouncer at a local bar and semi-pro football player. He was a very friendly and conversational guy; he opened up about his hopes for the future and his beliefs. Surprisingly, he asked us if we would have time to hang out while we were in Indiana, we said that if we got the chance, definitely.
A group prayed for a girl named Adrian who had suffered severe brain trauma after she had had a heart attack, right after she gave birth to her baby. She couldn’t speak and didn’t have much control over her motor skills. Her mom and dad take care of her now. She had been the director of music and led worship at her church, it was heartbreaking for her family to see her go through this, but they still had hope. She had already improved far beyond her doctor’s expectations. We all prayed for her and her parents cried. Adrian’s mother gave Lee a bracelet that said, “Pray for Adrian”. We connected with all kinds of people while downtown and had many meaningful conversations.
That evening Team 1 joined Team 2 at HHOOT’s where Team 2 had been working all day helping to clear out a new building HHOOT had just purchased and helping fold and organize donated clothing. Even though Team 2 didn’t have a whole lot of interaction with people outside the group, during one of their breaks a lady came in to donate some items and they were able to pray for her and her daughter.
There was a lot going on that evening; we served dinner, had conversations, played music, had a Bible study, and again helped with organizing the clothing bank. HHOOT has taken up residence in a very special place in our hearts. Though we’ve only served a couple times, we have built relationships that we invest in every time we go back.
