Roadtrip-Absalom M.

By Scotland Practicum 2011
Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

Absalom was not able to join us in Scotland, but this is a testimony of his practicum this semester.

Que tal Amigos!

Today I arrived at Heber City, Utah as part of my first stop on my Road Trip-Practicum. I met up with Mike and Christy Smith and I had a very warm welcome at their church. I met Pastor Shane Finley at Mountain View Fellowship and many other people at church.

God has already opened up opportunities to hang out with the Youth group here at the church. I will be sharing with them Tomorrow and Wednesday morning during their “A.X.I.S.” : Academics For Christ In School classes ( please pray that I will be faithful to communicate God’s heart to His children ).

I will also be helping with the “The Outreach Ministry”. This ministry provides food, clothing and helps the community by doing home repairs and clean-up.

It has been an exciting first day here in Utah.

May God continue to bless you in all things.

Day 8-Cup Final

By Scotland Practicum 2011
Saturday, May 21st, 2011

This morning we split into a few groups: one group, in honor of Motherwell making it to the cup finals (like the superbowl for us-it’s a BIG deal) for football (soccer), went into a local strip mall and painted faces and gave away balloon animals for free, another group walked around the streets and evangelized, and the third group (food team) stayed behind to do some food shopping and make lunch. Many people were blessed by the free face painting and balloons, and it was great to see the looks on their faces when they asked how much it was and we just smiled and said “free.” Later this afternoon we went back out and street evangelized for a couple hours. We were all given a little bit of money to bless others with, so some groups bought a meal for somebody, or maybe a coffee, and some other groups bought umbrellas to pass out since it was raining. After that we came back to the church for an early dinner and all went to bed early to get some much-needed rest that we will need for the next couple days.

Please continue praying for relationships to deepen and the Lord to be magnified in our lives and theirs.

Scotland Testimony-Andrew T.

By Scotland Practicum 2011
Saturday, May 21st, 2011

On our bus ride back to Motherwell, I had been praying to sit next to a certain guy, but the Lord wanted me to sit next to someone else and I ended up sitting next to another guy who’s name was Tom. I started talking to him and found out he was in high school and other basic information about him. Naturally, he noticed my accent and asked me where I was from, and I told him that I was from California, then he asked me why I was in Scotland. I told him that I was there with 40 other students and that we were part of a discipleship training program/Bible school and we were helping out with a Calvary church out here, but that the main reason that we were out here was to tell people that God loves them and that Jesus Christ died on the cross for them. Then I asked him what he thought about that and he said that he wasn’t religious but his grandpa was and he’d been to chapel before but wasn’t very interested in it anymore. I explained to him about how it was about a relationship with God, not just about religious practices. Then I asked him if he wanted to know God, and to my surprise, he simply said yes. Slightly dumbfounded because of his simple and non-conflicting response, I went on to explain the gospel message and I asked him if he wanted to accept Jesus Christ into his heart and he said yes, and again I was at a loss for words. So from there, I prayed for him and told him to pray to the Lord on his own in his own heart to repent of his sins and confess Jesus as his Lord and Savior, as I was praying for him. The Lord knows his heart, but it definitely seemed like there was a true, genuine response to the love of God. It was amazing to see how the Lord worked in that situation, because I hardly did any convincing at all-we had only talked for about 15 minutes-and he responded with the answer “yes.”

5-15-11

We were at the morning church service at Calvary Motherwell. My wife and I met a couple named Graeme (pronounced “Graham”) and Sandra. Sandra is a missionary from many years ago who met her current husband in Scotland. My wife and I connected with them immediately, we prayed for them and their needs. Graem invited us to his house on Wednesday evening for a Bible study. The evening ended, and you could feel the presence of the Lord heavily on our hearts and minds.

On Wednesday evening (5-18-11), about a dozen classmates went to Graeme’s house for the Bible study. Graeme was planning on going through 14 verses in Daniel chapter 2, but the Spirit compelled him to go through 49 verses. Graeme said he just couldn’t stop. After the study we were fellowshipping and one of the students was able to lead a man named Andy to the Lord. She (the student) told Andy that if she were to die tonight angels would usher her into Heaven, and she asked him if he were to die what would happen to him. He made a gesture with his hand that he would be going down. The student asked if he would like to change this, and he said yes. This is when she walked him through the sinner’s prayer. They both were in tears, and the whole house started rejoicing! Again, the Spirit of the Lord was so heavy that it was hard to leave the house and it was hard to go to sleep that night. The next day we talked to Graeme and he said that he and Sandra had had trouble sleeping because they were so excited about what God was doing in their house. Sandra said it was amazing to see God like this.

5-20-11

We took a bus to go and do our laundry. On our bus I met a man named Tam (pronounced “Tom”). He asked what we were doing and where we were from. I told him we were from San Diego, California and that we were here to be an accurate expression of the love of Jesus Christ. I asked him if he knew who Jesus was, and he said, “Yes, He is my Lord and Savior.” His story is how God delivered him from 17 years of heroine use. He started when he was 14 years old. He had been caught stealing from a man he used to sell drugs to, and the man told him when he caught him, “You have two choices: 1. You can go to jail, or 2. You can go see the priest. Tam chose to go to the priest. Tam said that’s when he was born again. He currently had 6 months clean and sober. I invited him to a free lunch at the church on Tuesday and I was able to pray with him on the bus. You could see the joy of the Lord in his eyes. What a blessing!

Day 7-Laundry and BBQ/football Outreach

By Scotland Practicum 2011
Friday, May 20th, 2011

Today we had two teams go to do their laundry and do outreach in the morning while the other two teams did bus outreach and ran some errands, and then we swapped in the afternoon. This evening we all met up again at Strathclyde Park for a BBQ/football(soccer)/kids outreach. We made some burgers and hot dogs and had a face painting station for the kids and otherwise just engaged people in conversation. It was a blessed time! When we came back to the church for the night we had a time of testimonies and shared what the Lord had been doing through us so far on this trip, and today alone two people were saved! Praise the Lord for the amazing work that He’s been doing in and through us.

Please pray for more soft hearts, ready to receive the Lord’s love in their lives and be transformed. We also learned today that one of the students, Rich, has an infection in his toe that is spreading to his foot. He went to the hospital today and was given some medication and he will be going back on Monday to see what’s up with the infection, and if it’s bad then he will need to stay in the hospital for a couple days. Micah is also still very sick, and many others are feeling sick as well, so please pray that God would restore us and revive us in our health and our strength and remember that even when we feel weak, it’s through our weaknesses that He is shown strong.

Scotland Testimony-Devon F.

By Scotland Practicum 2011
Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Coming to Scotland, everyone told me that practicum was going to be really hard, because people who had been on practicum before said it would basically just be more suffering. Really fun, but really hard. Kind of like wilderness in that you hate it while you’re there, but you wish you could go back. So I prepared myself for not really enjoying myself, but since I’ve been here, I’ve been extremely blessed because I found myself overcoming personal and spiritual issues, I’ve had a lot of questions answered and I’ve met a lot of people who have really blessed my life.

One day we were doing an outreach, and I wasn’t really feeling led to anyone, and everyone I tried to talk to, I just failed in communicating. So I talked to my leader Mike, and he was just telling me that maybe that wasn’t the gift that God had given me as far as evangelism. I told him that I would rather forge a relationship with someone that I could continue in, and Mike said that there’s nothing wrong with that. Being on outreach, I felt like we had to talk to everyone we could, but I just wasn’t feeling led. We came back to the church and I sat down at a table across from a local young man named Jamie, who was talking with some other students and I just got involved in the conversation. A few minutes later he looked up at me and said, “I have a question about the Bible.” Out of that question branched a spiritual conversation and a relationship was forged between Jamie and I that will continue after we leave Scotland. Soli deo gloria.

Day 6-Lunch and Church Service

By Scotland Practicum 2011
Thursday, May 19th, 2011

This morning we walked around the town and passed out flyers for another free lunch for the community, and then for the next few hours over lunch enjoyed fellowship and engaging in conversations with some locals, members of the church and non-members of the church alike. After lunch was over we went into the community once again to invite people to the mid-week Bible study tonight led by Jeff Kuhn (which was an awesome study by the way! =]). After the service we enjoyed another time of fellowship over tea and cookies with all the people who had come.

Please pray that as we are developing deeper relationships with the locals that we wouldn’t lose focus of why we’re here: to be an accurate expression and representation of the love of Jesus Christ.

At Bible study in a member of Calvary Motherwell’s house HSE students engaged and embraced our new environment as an accurate expression of the love of Jesus Christ. A young man gave his life to Jesus as the Holy Spirit led. Trained servants followed resulting in a young man being born again. All glory and praise to our Lord and our Savior Jesus Christ.

Day 5-Sabbath

By Scotland Practicum 2011
Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Today is our first sabbath day. We all split up and went to different areas around Scotland to sight see and evangelize. Some went to Glasgow and walked around the town there, some went to see Stirling Castle and the William Wallace memorial, a few of the guys went golfing, some hung out with locals, and some stayed behind at the church to rest and hang out around Motherwell. It was a fun and restful day having fellowship both with each other and with our Lord. Our plan for tomorrow is to do our soup and sandwich lunch outreach, and then tomorrow evening Jeff is going to teach the mid-week service at church and then we will go out for an outreach with members of the church body accompanying us.

Please pray that our hearts would remain focused on God during this trip and not be distracted by the things that Satan is trying to use to bring us down, and also that we would be able to see God’s power. Praise report: another member of our team leadership, Amy Kraft, arrived safely last night in Glasgow. Please keep her in prayer as she recovers from jet lag and jumps right in!

Day 4-Lunch and Clean Up

By Scotland Practicum 2011
Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

This morning we went out in our groups to invite people to the church for this afternoon’s free lunch. We engaged many people in conversation as we handed out our invitations, and then when we went back to the church for lunch we got to engage even more in conversation with the locals and really start developing some deeper relationships. After lunch was over we all headed out to do trash pick-up outreach for the rest of the afternoon before dinner back at the church, a devo, time in our groups, and then BED! =]

Please pray that our hearts would be encouraged in the midst of opposition and uncomfortable situations. We also have a praise report and continued prayer request for Micah, who was brought to the hospital last night because we thought he had pneumonia, but the doctor gave him some antibiotics and sent him back, saying that it was good we sent him when we did because it could have turned into pneumonia had we waited any longer. He and a few others are still sick though, so continued prayer for our health, rest, and strength are definitely needed.
